Co-Managed IT Services

You already have IT. You just don't have enough of it.

Maybe that's one person covering 80 users. Maybe it's a two-person team that hasn't taken a real vacation in three years because nobody else knows how the firewall is configured. Maybe it's a capable systems administrator who spends their week resetting passwords instead of doing the project work you hired them for.

Co-managed IT fixes that without firing anybody.

Let's get the awkward part out of the way

If you're the IT manager reading this, you've probably been told to "look into an MSP," and you're wondering whether you're researching your own replacement.

You're not. That's not what this is, and it's not how we make money.

Co-managed means you keep your team and your institutional knowledge — the stuff nobody could document if they tried — and we fill in around it. You stay in charge of your environment. You decide what we touch and what we don't. In most of our co-managed relationships, the internal IT lead is the person who tells us what the priorities are.

A good co-managed arrangement should make your job better, not smaller. If it isn't doing that, it's the wrong arrangement.

Your team keeps Priorities and roadmap The apps and ERP you know Vendor relationships Change approval Shared queue Day-to-day tickets Documentation Projects Escalation both ways We take Tier 1 help desk Nights and weekends Patching and backups Specialist depth
Scoped at the start and written down, because vague arrangements turn into finger-pointing the first time something breaks. The left column is the part that does not move.

What co-managed IT actually covers

Every arrangement is scoped differently, because every internal team is strong in different places. These are the pieces companies most often hand to us:

  • Tier 1 help desk. We take the password resets, the printer queues and the "my Outlook won't open" tickets so your team gets their day back.
  • After-hours and weekend coverage. Somebody answers at 2am so it doesn't have to be the same person every time.
  • Holiday, vacation and turnover cover. The company doesn't stop when your one IT person is in Florida — or when they give notice.
  • Monitoring, patching and backup verification. The unglamorous recurring work that slips first when a team is underwater.
  • Specialist depth on demand. Database, network, security, telephony, cloud architecture. You don't have to hire five specialists to occasionally need five specialties.
  • Project capacity. Migrations, rollouts and refreshes that would otherwise sit on the roadmap for another year.
  • Enterprise tooling. Our RMM, documentation and security stack, available to your team without you buying and administering it yourself.
  • A second opinion. Sometimes the most valuable thing we do is tell your CFO that your IT manager was right.

Signs co-managed IT is the right fit

  • Your internal IT person is the single point of failure for something important, and everybody knows it.
  • Projects keep getting pushed because day-to-day support eats the week.
  • You've been quoted for a second IT hire and the number made you wince.
  • Your team is strong on applications and your ERP, but thin on security or infrastructure.
  • Backups run, but nobody has tested a restore in a year because there's no time.
  • Your cyber insurance renewal is asking for controls you don't currently have.
  • Your IT lead is retiring, and the knowledge in their head isn't written down anywhere.

If three or more of those sound like your company, co-managed is probably a better answer than either hiring or fully outsourcing.

Co-managed vs. hiring vs. fully managed

Three honest options, and we'll tell you if we're not the right one.

Hire another IT person. Right when you have steady, predictable, full-time work for them and you can recruit and keep them. In Northwest Ohio, a second systems administrator is a real salary plus benefits plus the risk that they leave in eighteen months and you start over.

Co-managed IT. Right when you have good people who need depth, coverage and tools rather than a warm body. You get specialist skills and 24/7 coverage for less than a single additional salary, and it scales up or down without a hiring cycle.

Fully managed IT. Right when you have no internal IT at all, or when your IT person is retiring and not being replaced. If that's your situation, our managed services page is the one you want.

A second hire costs a full salary and still leaves the nights, the weekends and the skills they happen not to have. That gap is the whole case for co-managed.

Plenty of companies move between these over time. Some start co-managed and go fully managed when their IT lead retires. Some start fully managed and hire internally as they grow, and we step back. Both are fine.

How we work alongside your team

The thing that makes co-managed work or fail is boundaries. Vague arrangements turn into finger-pointing the first time something breaks. So we write it down before we start.

  1. Discovery. We document the environment — properly, not a one-page summary. Most internal teams tell us this alone was worth it, because it's the documentation they never had time to write.
  2. Division of responsibility. We agree in writing who owns what: which ticket types route to us, which stay internal, who touches the firewall, who approves changes, how we escalate to each other.
  3. Tooling and access. We deploy our stack alongside yours and get your team trained on it. Your people get access to the tools, not just the output.
  4. Run. Shared queue, agreed response times, your IT lead keeping priority.
  5. Review. Regular check-ins on what's working, what isn't, and what should shift in either direction.

Why Argyle for co-managed IT

We're in Perrysburg, so we're local to Toledo, Maumee, Bowling Green, Sylvania, Findlay and across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. When something needs hands on it, we drive.

We also do a few things most MSPs in this market don't, which matters when you're the one evaluating us:

  • Database administration. Very few providers in this area have real DBA capability. If your ERP slows down, we can look at the database instead of blaming the vendor.
  • Software and application development. When the answer is "that system can't do that," sometimes it can, with the right integration.
  • The specialties around the edges. Structured cabling, VoIP and Microsoft Teams telephony, virtualization, barcode and warehouse systems. The things that come up once a year and nobody internal wants to own.

We're a Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, Fortinet and Sophos partner, and we've supported Northwest Ohio manufacturers, healthcare practices, schools and professional firms for years.

Let's find out whether this fits

The first conversation is a scoping conversation, not a pitch. We'll ask what your team is strong at, where the gaps actually are, and what you'd want to hand over first. If co-managed isn't the right answer for you, we'll say so.

Call 419-419-5737 or send us a message and ask for a co-managed scoping call.
